Cardiac Catheterization
This procedure is performed to assess left ventricular function and cardiac output. It measures blood flow, oxygen content of the blood and the status of valves and conduction system. It is also performed to identify valvular and septal defects.
A small puncture is made into a vessel, typically in the groin. A guidewire is inserted into the puncture and threaded through the vessel into the area of the heart that requires treatment, visualized by fluoroscopy or echocardiogram. Then, a catheter is threaded over the guidewire. If fluoroscopy is used, a radiocontrast agent will be administered to the patient during the procedure. When the necessary procedures are complete, the catheter is removed. Firm pressure is applied to the site to prevent bleeding.
